This is actually quite an illuminating cross-section of the popular reaction. Not being a USian and having taken the day off sick, I wasn't availed of the whole story until the next day, so it isn't seared into the brain the way it was with a lot of my colleagues—but man this takes me back all the same.

A friend of mine journaled his university trip to Europe just these last two months—part of a course on memory and the First World War, so I'm rather primed for this topic. I think it's safe to say the War on Terror will go down as one of the most catastrophic misadventures in modern history, and a gross overreaction to what should have been prosecuted as a criminal act rather than this endless (and very much consciously-framed) crusade. Bush's deteriorating helmet may be Doonesbury's single best memetic, and Mavrik's post immediately brought it to mind.

On the more cynical side, I fav'd this during my deep dive into the archives back in April.
